Introduction to BDO (1,4-butanediol)
BDO,Chemical name: 1,4-butanediol, is an important fine chemical and organic raw material.
In terms of engineering plastics, it can be used to produce polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which has advantages such as heat resistance, aging resistance, and high strength. Therefore, it has a wide range of applications in industries such as automotive manufacturing and chemical engineering. The biodegradable plastics produced will greatly improve human damage to the environment.
In terms of electronic chemical engineering, BDO can be used as the main raw material for NMP, a lithium battery excipient. We know NMP is a solvent used as a positive electrode material for lithium-ion batteries. NMP not only improves the performance and cycle life of batteries, but also contributes to environmental protection and resource recycling.
In terms of fine chemical industry, BDO can produce gamma butyrolactone (GBL), tetrahydrofuran (THF), polytetramethylene glycol ether (PTMEG), and polyurethane (PU). Gamma butyrolactone is a raw material for producing 2-pyrrolidone and N-methylpyrrolidone products, which has led to a series of high value-added products such as vinyl pyrrolidone and polyethylene pyrrolidone. These products are widely used in fields such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Tetrahydrofuran is an important organic solvent, and the polytetramethylene ethylene glycol ether (PTMEG) obtained after polymerization is the basic raw material for producing high elasticity spandex. In our daily lives, spandex is mainly used to produce high elasticity knitwear such as high-end sportswear and swimwear.
In the pharmaceutical field, BDO can be used as an intermediate production of vitamin B6, acetals, adipic acid, etc.

There are currently four main types of industrialization for BDO: acetylene aldehyde method (Reppe method), maleic anhydride hydrogenation method, butadiene method, and epoxy propane method. The raw material formaldehyde is mainly produced by methanol oxidation, and can be divided into carbide acetylene method and natural gas acetylene method according to the different sources of raw material acetylene.
At present, Wuhai adopts the acetylene formaldehyde hydrogen production process (acetylene formaldehyde method). Wuhai is an important production base for calcium carbide in Inner Mongolia. BDO has driven the deep development of fine chemical industry for traditional high energy consuming calcium carbide, increasing the extensibility and upgrading value of calcium carbide.
