It has hygroscopicity and a bitter taste. BDO is an important organic and fine chemical raw material, widely used in fields such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, papermaking, automobiles, and daily chemical industries.

BDO can produce tetrahydrofuran (THF), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), butyrolactone (GBL) and polyurethane resin (PUResin), coatings and plasticizers, as well as serve as solvents and incremental agents in the electroplating industry.
